Few had the privilege of knowing Dan Holland at a deep enough level to appreciate the entirety of his complexity, intellect, and passion. While he left us at a much younger age than expected, I will always be deeply grateful for our friendship, where Dan always exuded kindness, fairness, wisdom, genius, and grace.

Historically the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) has had its unique approach to the product approval process. This was to create a Los Angeles Research Report (LARR) or use what was termed an Evaluation Report (ER) by a Nationally Recognized Model Code Agency.

The last 24 months have brought to the forefront a passion of mine: to visit as many industry veterans as possible. On January 28, I had the opportunity to visit Rip and Sally Rogers in Spring, Texas. Rip profoundly influenced 30 years of Qualtim staff work. He had a clear vision for the mission of the truss industry association. He left a considerable impression on my professional and personal life, and it was good to be able to say to him directly how much he has meant to me, how many he has touched, and how our group feels about him.

Some people are creative problem-solvers. Others build strong friendships and don’t take themselves too seriously. A special few people are able to make all the lives they touch better.

Paul Lautrup did all this and then some.

The current supply chain crisis has put a spotlight on dependency. It is weird when a supplier, a bureaucracy, or even a customer can unilaterally say, “you must do it our way or the highway!” Does Joe Rogan’s 70 episodes disappearing from Spotify come to mind?

A lesson in the value of collaboration from an industry innovator with a life-long desire to make things safer and easier for his customers.

The words on a somewhat famous plaque at the University of Wisconsin’s Bascom Hall in Madison reminds me that sometimes what we have been told is true is not and the facts need to be separated from the chaff (i.e., winnowed) for the truth to be made clear.
